Tobacco Farming

Tobacco, a controversial yet significant crop, has a rich history and surprisingly

interesting farming practices. Here at Green Feathers Farm (GFF), we understand the

complexities surrounding tobacco, and we strive to be responsible stewards of the land

while contributing high-quality produce.

Tiny Seeds, Big Dreams

Did you know a single gram of tobacco seed contains around 10,000-13,000 seeds?

That's a testament to the incredible potential that lies within even the smallest

beginnings. Similarly, at GFF, we started with a vision and are steadily growing our

tobacco production. In 2022, we cultivated a successful 56 hectares of tobacco, and

we're dedicated to increasing this number year on year. Our ultimate goal is to reach

400 hectares of tobacco by 2027, reflecting our commitment to responsible growth and

contribution to the agricultural sector.

From Seedling to Shelf: A Labour of Love

Unlike many crops, tobacco seeds germinate quickly - within 5-10 days! However, don't

let that fool you. Tobacco cultivation is known to be labour-intensive. From

transplanting seedlings to the meticulous harvesting and curing process, expert care is

needed at every stage. At GFF, we prioritise responsible labour practices, ensuring fair

treatment and safety for all involved.

A Look Ahead: Balancing Tradition and Innovation

As with any agricultural product, the future of tobacco farming is subject to change. At

GFF we acknowledge the health concerns associated with tobacco use and are

committed to exploring sustainable practices within our tobacco production. We are

constantly researching new techniques and technologies to optimise our processes

while minimising environmental impact.

Beyond Cigarettes: The Diverse World of Tobacco

While cigarettes are the most common use for tobacco, the leaves are also used for

cigars, chewing tobacco, and even snuff. The type of tobacco and its curing method

depend on the desired final product – a testament to the versatility of this crop. At GFF,

we focus on delivering high-quality tobacco leaves that meet the specific needs of our

customers.

Interesting Facts, Focused Future

Learning about the intricacies of tobacco farming allows for a deeper appreciation of
